Please feel free to contact me or post to the forums with suggestions or feedback.

New Features, Fixes, and Issues

Stereo Output! Prior releases folded all audio down to mono because most live PA's are mono systems and it was nice to be able to send the left output to an amp and the right one to a mixer input and have the same signal show up in both places. However, sometimes stereo is nice too. So I added a switch on the master channel to let you choose.

MIDI device substitution. Upon loading a file, if the original MIDI input device is not found, the user is presented with an option to choose a different MIDI device as a substitute. This choice need only be made once per missing device and all songs will make use of the substituted device. Most useful for people who don't use the same MIDI controller all the time. Previous behavior was to simply "forget" the MIDI controller and require the user to select it for every channel again. Eeek!

MIDI rechannelization has been fixed. Choosing an output MIDI channel (rather than just using "Thru") didn't actually result in MIDI messages being rerouted to that channel. This has been fixed.

Audio Output selector losing its settings when switching virtual instruments has been fixed.

Known Problems:

Icon masks need to be fixed.

Sometimes it crashes in response to changes in the MIDI environment. For instance, removing a MIDI or audio interface while JambaLaya is running. The workaround is to get all your gadgets plugged in and powered up before launching JambaLaya and don't remove them until you save and quit. I continue to improve this with each release and it is much better than it has been, but I won't call it bullet proof yet. FWIW, every other app I've tried (Digital Performer, Logic 8) also freaks out when the audio environment changes and, while they don't generally crash, they do require you quit and restart the app or face running in MIDI only mode.

No help implemented.

Thanks for trying JambaLaya. Upon choosing an external MIDI device as your source for a mixer channel, a configuration window pops up allowing you to select the audio input that the instrument is connected to. There are also selectors for patch bank and program selection. The values of the selectors are driven by midnam files. You can find midnam files for many hardware devices on the internet. Many patch librarians also generate them. You can also use the excellent Cherry Picker application to create your own midnam files. JambaLaya will remember patch information for each song and send the appropriate MIDI commands when switching songs. Thus, JambaLaya bridges the gap between hardware and software synthesizers!

Note Doubling. Clicking the button labelled 'Arpeggiator' opens a panel that allows you to enable note doubling. This allows you to play one finger power chords. You can set it up to play the fifths and octaves of each note. This is really useful for building up fat sounding patches by stacking octaves and fifths. Previously I would just instantiate a second synth and set a transpose - but I ran out of cycles on a few songs with lots of doubling.

A quick explanation of the controls follows.

Set/Song List

As one might expect, clicking on + adds sets and songs, - removes them. Drag songs to sets to add them. Drag them to All Songs to remove them from the set.

Keyboard Range Mapping/MIDI Routing

The colored bars on the upper right specify key board ranges - drag the ends to restrict which keys are active. Clicking on the colored labels to the left of the range bars focuses the MIDI detail view to the left of the keyboard. Use this to enter transposition values, and input/output MIDI channels.

Mixer

Each of the 8 input channels allows you to select, from top down, the MIDI input bus, the Audio Unit for the instrument, and up to 4 Audio Unit effects to insert. Clicking on the Audio Unit's name will open its user interface. Please feel free to contact me or post to the forums with suggestions or feedback.

New Features, Fixes, and Issues

Primary changes are conversion to commercial application, a number of bug fixes and improved compatibility with some other audio interfaces and legacy MIDI devices.

A new Audio Output selector has been added to each mixer channel. Now you can send your piano to one output jack and your synthesizer to another output jack on your audio interface to keep the signals separate for your sound engineer to mix later.

Previously, all signal sources had to be Audio Unit Virtual Instruments. Now External Audio Inputs can be used as well - allowing you to take advantage of insert effects with external sound sources.

If you have defined any MIDI devices in Audio MIDI Setup - these will also appear in the source signal selector. External MIDI Devices have the same level of support as Audio Units.

It also helps to have some virtual or MIDI capable instruments to play. It has no sequencing or recording capabilities of any kind. If you would like to purchase a commercial license, please email me at freakshow42@mac.com as the automatic auth key portion of the web site is not yet working. I will also provide time limited licenses upon request for evaulation purposes.

My Personal Goal

I wrote JambaLaya because, after many years 'retired' from playing, I joined a band of geezers and I needed a single app to take over managing a bunch of real and virtual instruments plus some basic audio processing in a live setting. JambaLaya has grown with my needs. At this point JambaLaya is my guitar rig (AmpliTube), keyboard rig (M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 controller), mixer (MOTU Ultralight with faders mapped to sliders on the Keystation), and fake book (thanks to lyrics pages). So JambaLaya is the best tool for my needs (aging guitarist/keyboardist who can't remember the chords or the words half the time). I want to make it the best tool for you too. Please feel free to contact me or post to the forums with suggestions or feedback.

New Features, Fixes, and Issues in 1.3.1

Automute Feature there is a new preference "Automatically Mute on Zero Volume" found under JambaLaya->Preferences. Checking this box will mute any channel when the fader is set to zero (the mute button will light up to indicate this). You will also notice that the CPU load from that instrument drops to zero as it ceases rendering audio. This saves on CPU resources. The instrument and all effects on the channel are also sent a "reset" command to silence any tailing audio. Not all instruments or effects implement this message correctly. The ones that don't will resume their audio decays immediately upon being 'unmuted'. A possible workaround is to move the volume up a little to take the track out of mute and let it "settle" before bringing the volume up full on. Also, write to the manufacturer of the audio unit in question and complain about their implementation of AudioUnitReset. :-)

Smarter Muting - JambaLaya used to restore the saved state of audio units upon unmuting. This made some sample based interments think they were getting a patch change and would make them reload their samples. JambaLaya now only restores instrument state upon changing songs.

Numerous small fixes for working around problems with Native Instruments Akoustik and Elektrik Pianos.

Fixed display of About JambaLaya box.

Additional optimization of drawing routines.

Known Problems:

Icon masks need to be fixed.

No help implemented.

Thanks for trying JambaLaya.
